Fall is the best time to start laser hair removal. Your summer tan has faded, you are covering up more, and a full series of six to eight visits spaced four to six weeks apart runs into the months when hair is easiest to leave alone, so you are well along (and for many people finished) by the time shorts and swimsuits come back.

That is the short answer, and it comes with an honest footnote: you can start in any month. Fall just removes the two things that slow a series down, which are sun on the skin and a deadline.

Why is fall the best time to start laser hair removal?

Fall is best because the sun stops working against you. The laser looks for pigment in the hair, and a tan adds pigment to the skin, so the laser has to be set around it. In fall your tan fades, the area stays covered, and a full series runs through the months with the least sun exposure.

The skin does the rest: it is untanned, the sun is lower, and the area you want treated is under sleeves and trousers most days.

There is also a plain scheduling reason. A series is a run of visits, not a single appointment. Start in October or November and the visits fall across the quietest months of the calendar, with no beach week or wedding to work around.

Our own appointment book shows the same pattern. Laser hair removal is our number one treatment all year, but it drops off in the fall and is very high in the spring, when everyone remembers summer is coming. Fall is when most of our clients turn to skin rejuvenation instead, erasing the signs of summer. Start hair removal in the fall and you are months ahead of the spring rush.

How long does a full series take?

Most people need six to eight visits, spaced four to six weeks apart. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only catches the follicles that are active on the day, so each visit treats the next group coming in. One visit can never do it all, and coming in sooner does not speed anything up.

Here is the arithmetic for a first visit at the start of November, using those ranges:

Visits

Gap between visits

Series length

Last visit around

6

4 weeks

about 5 months

mid-March

6

6 weeks

about 7 months

end of May

8

4 weeks

about 6.5 months

mid-May

8

6 weeks

about 10 months

late August

That matches how we schedule. The visits themselves are short: we book them in 15, 30 or 60 minute blocks, small areas such as the upper lip or underarms are very quick, and large areas such as full legs or a back take an hour at most.

Read the table as a range, not a promise. We give you our honest estimate of how many visits you will need in the first conversation, after we have looked at the hair and the skin.

Does a tan really matter?

Yes, but it rarely stops a visit. Keep the area out of the sun for 7 to 10 days before each visit. A tan puts extra pigment in the skin, so if you arrive tanned, Trish uses a different laser setting rather than sending you home. What she needs is to know when the area last saw the sun.

That is why we ask for no tanning, no self-tanner and no sunburn on the area, before and between visits, and why we ask about your last sun exposure every time. For the most part we can treat any skin type and any level of sun exposure, as long as we know when that exposure happened.

This is the quiet advantage of fall. If you stopped tanning in September, your skin is already clear for the first visit. If you start in June, every visit has to be planned around the beach, and the whole series is spent protecting the area from the sun.

Is it too late if it is already winter or spring?

No. A series works the same in January as in October. The only difference is where it ends: a January start finishes later in the year, and a May or June start means first visits during the strongest sun, when the area is most likely to be tanned.

If you are reading this in spring and want to be smooth by next summer, the answer is still to start now. A series that is under way before summer means far less shaving when summer arrives.

Does fall work for darker skin?

Yes. Fall helps every skin tone, and we treat all skin types. The Candela GentleMax Pro carries two lasers, an Alexandrite and an Nd:YAG, and the Nd:YAG wavelength exists so darker skin can be treated safely. The sun rule above is the same for everyone.

In Trish's words: "I can laser any skin type no matter how dark they are, if we are talking just hair removal." The machine is only half of it. A practitioner who is confident with the Candela GentleMax Pro adjusts the settings to your Fitzpatrick skin type (the 1 to 6 scale of how skin reacts to the sun) and to your recent sun exposure. We have treated a very diverse population for more than 20 years, and that experience is what makes the adjustment safe.

Grey, white and very blond hair is the honest limit, because the laser needs pigment in the hair to find it, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a series.

What should I do before the first visit?

Shave the day before, skip waxing for four weeks, and keep the area out of the sun. Those three habits decide whether your first visit goes ahead as planned. Here is the full list we give people at North Shore Laser Center, in order:

  1. Shave the area within a day of the appointment.

  2. No waxing, plucking or threading for four weeks before, because the root has to be there for the laser to find it.

  3. Keep the area out of the sun for 7 to 10 days, with no tanning, self-tanner or sunburn, and tell us when it last saw the sun.

  4. Skip retinoids on the face for a few days.

  5. Come to the free conversation first. It takes about an hour, we look at the hair and the skin, do a test spot if there is any doubt, and tell you how many visits to expect.

Between visits, keep shaving (not waxing), stay out of the sun, and expect hair to shed over the following two weeks.

What does laser hair removal cost?

At North Shore Laser Center you pay one visit at a time, with no packages and no prepaying. In 2026, small areas start from $125 per visit, medium areas from $500 and large areas from $750. See what things cost for current numbers.

Small areas are the upper lip, chin or underarms, medium areas the bikini line or lower legs, and large areas full legs or a full back. Where you land depends on the size of the area and how much hair is there.

Paying per visit also makes fall an easy time to begin. You can start, see how your skin responds, and decide each time whether to continue.

As Trish puts it: "Fall is a great time to start because it takes several treatments for final results, which puts you into spring for just touch up and maintenance, and summer you are ready."

Questions people ask

What age can you start laser hair removal?

For girls, we begin laser hair removal once menstruation has started. Before that point, we recommend waiting. If you are unsure whether the timing is right, we are happy to discuss it at a consultation, which is always free.

Can I start laser hair removal in winter?

Yes. A series works the same in any month. Winter is a good time to begin because the area is usually untanned, and a full series can still finish before the next summer if you start early in the new year.

Is fall better than spring for laser hair removal?

Fall is better for most people because the summer tan has faded and the sun is easier to avoid. Spring works too, but the first visits happen as the sun strengthens, and a series that runs long can reach summer before it ends.

How many laser hair removal visits do I need?

Most people need six to eight visits spaced four to six weeks apart. Hair grows in cycles and the laser only catches active follicles, so the number depends on the area, the hair and your skin. You get our honest estimate in the first free conversation.

Do I need to avoid the sun before laser hair removal?

Yes. Keep the area out of the sun for 7 to 10 days before each visit, and avoid tanning, self-tanner and sunburn between visits. If the skin is tanned, the laser setting is changed to suit it, so always tell us when the area last saw the sun.
