Matrix or Morpheus8: which RF microneedling is better?

For most faces, the Matrix™ is the better radiofrequency microneedling device: it treats three depths in a single insertion, reaches up to 3.5 millimeters, checks its own energy delivery as it goes, and sends you home with a day or two of pink instead of most of a week. Morpheus8 is the better pick when the job is fat and contour on the body, where its deeper Body handpiece earns its keep.

That is the short answer. I chose the Matrix™ for North Shore Laser Center in 2023 after looking hard at both, and this is the comparison I wish I had been able to read then, with the numbers, the prices and the one place where the other device wins.

What is the difference between Matrix and Morpheus8?

Both are radiofrequency microneedling: fine needles carry radiofrequency energy under the surface, where the heat makes the skin build new collagen. The difference is who makes them and how the energy is delivered. The Matrix™ is made by Candela Medical and treats three depths per insertion. Morpheus8 is made by InMode and treats one depth per pass, or several with its newer Burst tips.

The energy is the point, not the needles. Plain microneedling (what we do with the Exceed) relies on the tiny injuries alone. Radiofrequency microneedling adds controlled heat at the depth where collagen is made, which is why it can tighten as well as smooth.

Matrix™ (Candela Medical)

About $1,050 to $1,200 a session at practices near us and online

Which goes deeper, and does deeper mean better?

Morpheus8 goes deeper on paper, and no, deeper is not better on a face. Collagen lives in the dermis, which on most of the face is two to four millimeters down. Below it is fat, and radiofrequency heat delivered into facial fat can shrink it. On a cheek or a temple, that is a hollow you did not ask for.

This is why the three-depth design matters more to me than the maximum number. In one insertion the Matrix™ treats a superficial, a middle and a deep layer, each at its own energy, and it measures the skin's resistance (impedance) as it goes so the energy lands where it was meant to. Candela's own explanation of that feature is that it lowers the risk of unintended fat loss, and that matches what I see in the treatment room: tightening without a gaunt look.

For a neck, a jawline, upper arms or knees, I set the Matrix™ deep. Around the mouth and eyes, I do not want 4 millimeters anywhere near the skin.

Which one hurts less and has less downtime?

The Matrix™ is the more comfortable of the two, and recovery is shorter. We numb first with a topical cream, the treatment itself takes under an hour, and you leave pink. Most people are back to normal skin within a day or two, with makeup after twenty-four hours. Morpheus8 practices usually quote three to five days of redness and swelling.

Two things make the difference. Thinner needles cause less trauma on the way in, and three depths in one insertion means fewer insertions for the same coverage, so there is less to heal.

Within the Matrix™ itself, downtime depends on the applicator. Sublime leaves mild redness that fades in two to four hours. Sublative is one to two days. The microneedling applicator, the deepest, is two to three days at most.

When is Morpheus8 the better pick?

Morpheus8 wins when the goal is fat remodelling and contour on the body. Its Body handpiece reaches 8 millimeters of thermal depth with 40 pins, built for an abdomen, flanks or thighs where the aim is to heat and shrink a layer of fat under lax skin. I do not offer that, and I will say so rather than stretch a face device over a body problem.

It is also the better fit if a practice has done thousands of faces on it. Experience with a device counts for as much as the device, so if you are comparing two practitioners rather than two machines, ask how long each has worked with the one in their hands.

For a face, a neck, acne scarring, pores, lines and mild to moderate laxity, I have not found a reason to prefer Morpheus8.

What does the FDA's 2025 warning about RF microneedling mean for you?

It means the device should be in trained, licensed hands, which is what the FDA said. On October 15, 2025 the FDA issued a safety communication on certain uses of radiofrequency microneedling after reports of burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage. It did not name a brand and did not say how many reports it had.

Its advice to patients is that radiofrequency microneedling is a medical procedure, not a home treatment, and that you should choose a licensed provider trained on the specific device. In December 2025 the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery answered that, in proper settings, the treatment is safe and effective, and asked members to list those risks on their consent forms.

The consent form you sign before a Matrix™ treatment at the Spa already lists every one of those risks, and we go through them with you. Fat loss is the one I take most personally, because device design helps prevent it: three measured depths and impedance monitoring exist so that heat goes into collagen, not fat.

What does Matrix cost in Salem, MA, and how many visits?

At North Shore Laser Center, skin tightening and wrinkle reduction with the Matrix™ runs $250 to $1,200 per visit in 2026, depending on the area and whether the plan combines applicators. You pay one visit at a time, with no packages and nothing up front. The full list is on what things cost.

A series is usually three visits, four to six weeks apart, then a maintenance visit after about a year. Collagen keeps building for months after the last visit, so the result at six months is better than the result at six weeks. If the second visit turns out not to be needed, you will not be sold it.

For comparison, Morpheus8 near us is quoted at about $1,050 for a face and neck session, and $1,200 a session at practices that publish their prices (2026), often as a package of three.

Why did I choose Matrix for the Spa?

I chose it because I already trusted the maker. I have worked with Candela since the Spa opened in 2005, when I certified on the GentleMax Pro™, the laser behind our hair removal. Nineteen years with one company's engineering, training and service made the Matrix™ the natural next tool. I certified on it in 2023 and completed the advanced certification in 2024.

The device sealed it. Three applicators on one console let me treat someone who wants no downtime before an event (Sublime), someone with texture and large pores (Sublative) and someone with real laxity (the microneedling applicator), and stack them in one plan. And the honest reason underneath: I do not want to be the practice that sells you the better-advertised machine. I want to be the one that chose the right one.

What results can I expect?

Expect gradual tightening and smoother texture over three to six months, not a different face. Collagen builds slowly, which is exactly why the result still looks like you. The jawline and neck below were treated at the Spa.

Most plans stack the Matrix™ with other tools: a skin tightening plan might pair it with the Collagenizer NEO or the GentleMax Pro™, as explained in stacking your treatments. The three applicators are described in more detail in introducing Matrix.

Questions people ask

Is there anything better than Morpheus8?

For a face, yes: the Matrix™ treats three depths in one insertion with impedance monitoring and thinner needles, which means more comfort, less downtime (a day or two against three to five) and less risk of unwanted fat loss. For fat remodelling on the body, Morpheus8's deeper Body handpiece is the better tool.

Is Morpheus8 really worth it?

Radiofrequency microneedling is worth it when you want tightening and texture without surgery, and both devices do that job. Whether a session is worth its price depends on the practitioner's experience and on paying only for what you need. At the Spa a Matrix™ visit is $250 to $1,200 in 2026, paid per visit with no packages.

Is Morpheus8 more painful than microneedling?

Yes. Any radiofrequency microneedling adds heat to the needles, so it feels like more than plain microneedling with the Exceed, which most people describe as fine sandpaper. Both are done with numbing cream. Of the two radiofrequency devices, the Matrix™ is the more comfortable because its needles are thinner and it needs fewer insertions.

Does the FDA warning about RF microneedling apply to Matrix?

The FDA's October 15, 2025 safety communication covers radiofrequency microneedling as a category and names no device, so it applies to the Matrix™ and Morpheus8 alike. Its advice is to have the treatment from a licensed provider trained on the specific device. At the Spa the consent form lists every risk the FDA named, and we review it with you before the first visit.

How many Matrix treatments do I need, and how long do results last?

Usually three visits, four to six weeks apart, then a maintenance visit after about a year. Collagen keeps building for three to six months after the last visit, and the result holds for a year or more with maintenance. You get an honest estimate for your own skin in the first free conversation.
